Yes, by your description, it is the "bridge" I'm looking for.
Recommendations for consumer-grade that won't break the bank? Can I presume
that the router and bridge do NOT need to be the same brand?

Are "bridge" and "repeater" synonymous?

I am avoiding a card for the Ubuntu box because I need this to be plug &
play (hence use the onboard ethernet which I know already works). I have
played around with a supposedly Ubuntu-compatible card long enough, and
wasted precious weekend time, such that my patience has expired. Any
problems that crop up after Monday morning means I won't be able to fix it
until Friday evening. (With Windows, I can usually resolve over the phone.)

If you're looking at a bridge, instead of that maybe look for a USB WiFi

Esteemed PC-Tech listers:

What is the name for a device that *receives* a wi-fi internet signal and
uses an ethernet cable that connects to a PC? I'm pretty sure I've seen
this before, but am unable to remember enough to set up a search for one.
And product recommendations are welcome as well.

I have an Ubuntu box that I have given up trying to get a wireless card to
work in. I know the ethernet port works, but the Ubuntu box will be in a
room in my house that I cannot easily wire with ethernet.
