Mark,

This may not have been part of your request but I'll chime in on the software part of this.

Colleges or universities of any significant size will have discounted software for their students. Unless you get a great deal on software packaged with the system I would wait on any type of Microsoft office type products until you see what the school has. My son started at A&M last year and we picked up a copy of XP Pro and Office 2007 for $25 each. I have also purchased corporate versions of antivirus software through another university when I was attending there. Each school will be different and I'm sure the size of the school matters. My daughter attended a small private university and they didn't have any discounts on software products. You can contact the school and get a contact person who knows what software they sell. Also check out the student software web sites. The discounts aren't as good as schools but still can be significant. Last year I purchased Photoshop CS3 for $300, retailed for around $900 - $1,000.

I'm sure you already thought of this but I'll mention it anyway. Depending on your son's major there might be specific hardware and/or software requirements. For example, my son is required to have a laptop that will handle CAD applications. It is used in some of his classes as part of the lecture so a desktop wasn't an option for us.

HTH,

Rick

Thanks all, we went out last night and tried about a half dozen "wheeled"
cases and it's not gonna work, his walking motion and balance make it even more difficult and slower than it is already.
