In theory there's a detection that accommodates for some potential
problems although I'm sure not all. If you have hardware for which
driver issues exist then SP1 won't show as an option. For that reason
I'm letting Windows Update determine when my machines gets the SP.

So far, 1 of my 3 Vista machines has SP1. It was one of the machines
that got it when SP1 was leaked early by accident. It took a while to
install, like 40+ minutes on a quad-core machine with 4GB RAM, but I'm
pretty sure disk was the overall bottleneck.

I can't say there's any glaring functional differences in SP1. But my
machine's performance index went up a fraction from 5.7 to 5.9 so there
are some internal efficiency improvements.
