picking one of a hundred different Linux versions.

To your credit, you did *NOT* mention the distro that you're using ...
others who have made the mistake of mentioning a distro have been the
subject of holy wars.

And the choice of Linux variant is a pretty business-specific thing, in my
opinion. There are a LOT of things to consider. For example, in my case
the issue was heavily weighted by the available VMWare configurations. My
initial thought was to use something pre-installed and while I became
comfortable with the Linux issues, researching other options. Then I would
do a scratch install of my chosen distro (ugh, I hate that term, almost as
much as I hate i18n).

Even then, there are tons of options. For example, there was an all-in-one
email appliance called Port25 which runs its very own version of Linux, with
its own package distribution scheme. It's very cool, very sophisticated,
very advanced, and thus completely beyond my comfort zone.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would pick anything other than
Fedora <grin/>.

As it turns out, the distro I chose is rock stable and has everything I
need. It's not Fedora, but it's darned close <grin>.
