With my previous laptop (Inspiron 800m, which was almost identical to
the 8600 except for the screen) the aspect ratio was square. It worked
really well when I was using an external monitor. Things tended to stay
in the same place.

With this laptop I haven't really used the external monitor much. I'll
have to drag it from the basement to see how it works out.

My D620 has a wide screen. The majority of the time I've got it hooked up
to a square monitor on my desk at work. It adjusts the aspect ratio for
whichever monitor is in use. If I open it up so that I can view both
monitors at the same time it keeps both screens functioning as you would
expect simultaneously.
