Consider that consumer grade WAPs/routers don't do data packet captures
but a PC can.


Although somebody out to do this may not use a consumer grade router but one
with a monitoring port, or the WAP may first pass through a hub which also
has a PC connected to capture all the packets, or various other means.  So
just because it is an infrastructure mode network does not mean it can't /
won't be sniffed.

For the most part, anything traveling over the net you must assume can be
captured by somebody if they have incentive.  That said, it is admittedly
that much easier with an ad hoc network, and I agree a name like "Free
Internet Access" is probably not a free lunch.
