OK. When you say "thunk" are you referring to a windows sound played
through the speakers? I assumed you meant a physical thunk coming
w/inside the case. 

If it's simply a windows sound, then don't worry about the drive, you're
correct that it's some setting, perhaps GPO related, perhaps not. The
first thing I'd do is turn on audit logging both in the local security
policy and on the hard drive. Open The LSP and look at Auditing, there's
a setting to enable failure auditing. 

Then right click on c:\ and go to security. Click on Advanced at the
bottom and go to the Auditing tab. Add 'Everyone' and turn on Full
Control Failure Auditing. 

Then make the "Thunk" noise. And then check the security event log and
see if anything is there. 

Come to think of it, have you checked the event logs yet to see if
something is already logged in Application or System (or security)?
