I use TBird at home to send my mail through either my ISP's SMTP server, 
or through GMail.

So it is possible (look on GMail's site for instructions).

You can retrieve your mail from gmail with pop3, but I don't think you 
can send that way.

You might want to look into one of the domain registrars ... they often 
provide some basic email service for free or cheap.  I use godaddy and 
they have a basic free email service with domains.
