What didn't work?  Was it the Key/ID that was causing the problem, or the 
activation?   When he said "Phone Home" ID, I assumed he meant "Product 
Key", correct?

It is my understanding that when you activate a computer, you activate the 
Product Key.  When you activate a Product Key it is tied to that 
particular computer's hardware.   You can keep re-installing and 
activating Windows on the same computer repeatedly as long as the hardware 
doesn't change and you use the same key.  It shouldn't matter how you 
install Windows, as long as you give it the correct Product Key when you 
do the installation.
