i missed the beginning of this thread, but my 2 cents:

my thinkpad t-40 has been rock solid for 2 years now.   I don't know
how expensive it was (probably very - it was purchased by my
employer), but I've not had any problems with it whatsoever - well,
except for that one time I spilled coffee on it.

I plan to purchase it when it's retired.
