First, are the connections secure? Otherwise, do you have a unit you can swap in? These things do die from time to time.

If I put a blank CD in the drive, the system reacts as usual and pops up the
CD utility to ask what I want to do with it.  However, it doesn't matter
what option I select, the drive is not recognized as write capable.  I've
tried two different CD burning programs and both behave the same.

Any suggestions?
