It sounds like Firefox is downloading the file to a folder on your
system instead of trying to open it.  This is the default behavior for
Firefox .8 on my Linux Desktop.  You can find the default folder by
looking in "Tools... Options... Downloads..."

Sorry I can't help with the plug-in part, but at least you can find your
docs...
