Could some of the newer boxes be pulling Windows Update files in the
background? 

Analog-X has some nifty & free tools:
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network.htm.  Take a look at
PacketMon.  (Unrelated to your problem, but for a general boost in
Internet performance, get FastCache.  It caches DNS lookups to the local
PC.)
