It will think of it as a link if you include it as such. It will only think
of the link itself as being a part of the document, not the referenced file.

But I do not want to include the whole document or spreadsheet, just the 
icon that links to it...  that is my whole concern.

Will MS Word interpret that having the icon is like having the document 
embedded or included in the total file size of the main document.
