I'd recommend doing the full backup to tape, if you have the
"appropriate" tape drive and software. Here's an example: my laptop's
20 GB drive was almost at capacity. I purchased a new 40GB drive, but
the question was how to get the drive duplicated. What I did was to a
complete backup in Tapeware XE, create a disaster recovery CD, swap the
drives, boot from the CD and the restore process occurred pretty much
hands off over the next day. The CD will have all of the appropriate
drivers to load the data from the tape drive and will automatically boot
up the appropriate operating system -- in this case W2K.
After this experience, I am purchasing more external drives and software
and connection hardware for the laptops we have here in the company.
