The flickering pointer sounds like some process running in the background
that might be cataloging your HD or something like that (an anti-virus
scan?).  I quite often get something similar when I first startup.  But the
selecting text is something new to me.

Yeah, already mentioned the SpyBot, but you reminded me of AdAware.  I'll
have to download that one tonight.

No, there are no special toolbars loaded.  This happens with either browser
(IE & Mozilla).  Actually the pointer switching behavior occurs in all
applications, not just the browsers.  It's annoying all around, but it's
especially a killer when trying to type a URL.  I have to open notepad to
type the URL and then copy/paste that to the address window.
