Port 445 on WINDOWS is open because Windows needs to use it. Port 445 on
your firewall will be closed by default. As has been stated, all incoming
ports on firewalls are blocked by default. It has to be told to open them.

The problem with sasser and other such viruses, is they get in via email.
Ignorant users run file attachments. Now a computer BEHIND the firewall is
infected and it can attack all the computers. It was no fault of the
firewall, whether home based or corporate.

Then, you have other situations like msblast virus that attacked on port
135. That one got in through the previous email methods AS WELL as semi
retarded system administrators and/or application developers that had port
135 open on their firewalls. Again, the firewall was just doing what it was
told to by the administrator.

I'm not sure how many more times people can reiterate the point that
incoming packets on a router are blocked unless you specifically invite them
in. ;)
