I've disabled the indexing service, and taken 'fast find' and 'office
startup' from my startup folders, in fact, i don't even have that check box
at the bottom of C:/properties, so that isn't it. thanks for trying though.

Been there, done that.  In fact I recommended the same website to someone
else on the list who was trying to decide between XP and W2K.

I've kept track of all the services I've shut down, and am checking back
with them on a semi-daily basis to see if they get restarted, so that we
can ghost these settings for all future XP installs we do.  It's amazing
how much crap you don't need that runs in the background on a default XP
install.

I watched mine for about 5 minutes, and most of the time it was at 0%.
Every now and then, something would wake up for a single refresh cycle,
then go back to sleep.  Those were never more than 2%, mostly 1% usage.
things like taskmgr, CSRSS something or other, NLNOTES, connect.exe, virus
protection, etc.

I had 3 CA sessions, 2 Excel spreadsheets, Notes and Sametime running at
the time.

I wonder if these 'wakeups' get tracked in the system log file or
something.
