Thanks for the pointers. I went round and round in circles for a
while because I could not seem to set CC at all. A simple "export
CC=/usr/bin/gcc" just said "identifier not found".

Then it dawned on me that I may not be using bash, so I did "CC=/
usr/bin/gcc; export CC" and that worked - and so did the npm install :)

Yes, default shell in PASE is bsh (Bourne Shell) and not bash (Bourne
Again Shell). It does not know how to set and export on the same line.

Presumably there is some way to have CC set permanently?

You can set it in your .profile or /QOpenSys/etc/profile. See this thread
