That's what ServIT has gone to. At least I think so because the rep said
it was from Seagate.

We use eVault (Seagate).

Vault/400 (another product) is the same eVault product under a different
badge.

eVault has different agents for most platforms.

Now that makes sense. Use the vault for near term. Use tapes for older
stuff.

Can I ask who is doing the vaulting? Is it ServIT?

We have been using Data Vaulting for 3 years now, and to be fair have
changed the way we initially wanted to use it. We are only vaulting
native system i data, including IFS.

There are many variables, including compression rates. For one
particular vendor, the native i objects have the best compression for
the entire lineup.

We started by wanting to do bare metal DR restores using the vault,
but
have now decided to go HA instead. But we have realized tremendous
benefits to our development staff on using it as a tool.

I currently have 8 weeklies and 6 dailies on two different partitions.
The vault totals I have currently saved as of today are 361 savesets,
11.7TB original size, about 480GB compressed. I just negotiated a
renewal for only $750 a month.

I decided the monthlies and annuals were unnecessary on the vault -
keeping those on tape.

We can restore any native or IFS object from any day in the last week
or
any week in the last 8 weeks in minutes.

All,

I decided to look into data vaulting. I got a quote just to see what
the
costs would be.

System i data: 84gb, 14 dailys, 4 weeklys and 13 monthlys = $258/mo.
Windows servers data: 900gb, 14 dailys and 4 weeklys = $2,100/mo.

This was so far beyond what I thought the costs would be that I am
absolutely stunned. When I asked how companies justified it, the
reply
I
got was savings on buying blank tapes. I could restock my entire
supply
of
tapes every week and spend less.
