I would think that the statement: IBM wouldn't buy Sun at any price. would be a giveaway that IBM either found something (or not) in their research of Sun that turned them off to the idea completely. Maybe in the hopes of someone else snapping up Sun, and getting stuck with the issue(s).
It could also be that IBM i marketing was in charge of the negotiations. :-)
