I read a couple of years ago about "rural sourcing", and my first thought was "How do I sign up"? :-) It would be nice to have my current income with residential mobility.

The costs of living in the wilds, or even not so far but out aways, in a zillion ways is a fraction of what the costs are in urban areas. If some US companies are still outsourcing even to Ireland, it makes perfect sense to me.

My last job was as an employee of CSC (Computer Science Corp), and our direct supervisor did his job from his buffalo ranch on a mountain in Montana. Brr.. But he was more on the "CSC side" of things, and we and his other shop were the "in-house" bodies.

CSC was a good employer in accomodating that, and enabling training in tech, but they are money-conscious in the extreme.

Also, one of the first things they did (before I got there) was to send a guy down that knew the AS400/iSeries to plan offshoring, but the guy looked at their code and went back and reported back that it was impossible. (The company had had a "very special" IT manager over the years ahem)
