Depending on what you want to do, it costs a bit of money.

However, Time Sharing doesn't help you if you need technical skills on
the platform because you usually don't have QSECOFR access on a time
sharing machine.

You'll need to get your hands on an old machine like a model 800 (V6R1
ready) or 270 (V5R4 is the last working release). Usually low end
configurations of these can be had off ebay. Or just ask a local
System i BP if they have anything on stock. This is of course not
entirely legal because you don't any licenses to the OS, but as long
as you're not running a business on the system it won't matter much.
