To answer your question it probably would not have helped in this
specific situation. In this case the company was looking for packages
and to not modify them.

However, your points on EGL are very valid and they do present some very
interesting options for the customer base.

The question back is EGL a valid tool for existing System i software
vendors and for new software vendors?

Yeah, but you didn't answer the question. Would an integrated language
that
builds browser pages fit the bill for your hypothetical engineer? You
could
buy the integrated system and then provide whatever GUI interface they
needed.
