OK, first off, I'm not a hardware guy ... but there's really no one else
here to deal with this stuff, so it falls on me.

I'm trying to setup the HMC's Call Home functionality because I've been
getting automated nags from IBM about missing heartbeat events.

So I went through the HMC's Electronic Service Agent Setup wizard and
ran the test, but got the following results...

Beginning test of serviceable event processing
Serviceable event 19 created
Remote support request was initiated
Remote support request queued at localhost(10.254.0.1)
Request starting transmission at localhost(10.254.0.1). This may take
several minutes to complete.
Event authorization failure detected by service RETAIN
Event authorization failure detected by service RETAIN
Event authorization failure detected by service RETAIN

One thing that's glaring about this is the ip "10.254.0.1" ... when I
get to the Call-Home Server Consoles step of the wizard, it seems to
auto-discover this IP, but I have no idea where that's coming from.

Any suggestions?

Not sure about that IP address [or just about anything else for that matter], but the implication of the next error(s) is that contact was made with RETAIN, but there is not the authority to process the request. SWAG: From [TechNote N1018611: Configuring HMC Version 7 for Call Home](http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=nas8N1018611)
"Step 4. Checking for failures in the console event log.
4a. To investigate call home status, click HMC Management in the navigation area, and then click View HMC Events. Look for entries related to the problem number of the test service event. The most common failure is machine not registered. If you encounter a machine not registered, contact your business partner or IBM sales representative and request that they register Machine type-model/serial number provided in the error message."
