We do this in CL like this:

STRSBS SBSD(SBSTOCHECK)
MONMSG MSGID(CPF1010) EXEC(DO)
/* subsystem is up */
ENDDO

If its not up you can do something like STRSBS

******
CPF1010 Subsystem name &1 active.
