I'm thinking of testing with a printer that supports PDF printing. Then
the USERASCII option should work, correct?

I'm looking at this one
HP LaserJet Pro M377dw
it says it's standard printing languages are
HP PCL 6, HP PCL 5c, HP postscript level 3 emulation, PCLm, PDF, URF,
