So what you are asking is does virtual tape image catalog support work on
NFS?
No.
I have a directory called /gdihq/tmp on my MAIL1 lpar.
GDIHQ did an EXPORTFS of it's /tmp directory
MAIL1 did a MOUNT of /gdihq/tmp on to /tmp on GDIHQ.
When I run
CRTIMGCLG IMGCLG(GDIHQTMP) DIR('/gdihq/tmp') TYPE(*TAP) CRTDIR(*NO)
CPD4F06 - Unable to determine absolute path name.
CPFBC02 - Image catalog GDIHQTMP was not created in library QUSRSYS.

Error number 3025 was received.
DSPMSGD CPExxxx, where xxxx is the error number

The help on the directory says it will try to determine the absolute path
name and go directly. So if you did a local symbolic link it will go to
the end point instead. Apparently on remotes it shuts it down.
