I don't know about the 8s, but we have a 7, and until the OS or hyperwhatchamacallit are awake, the fans run at full throttle. They should settle down to a quieter roar once they realize that the system is NOT overheating!

Our V7000 and much of the other equipment in our computer room do the same thing if you have to reboot them.

When we first put our present UPS into service, it was so damn noisy I ended up putting an auxiliary fan on it, just to suppress the internal fan from coming on when the inverter wasn't running.

Our E4A is noisy enough as it is. Power 8s are even noisier?

We had, at one time, a big Sun workstation around the office that sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
