I ended up creating a manual quicklaunch shortcut following the the second
link below. And once the quicklaunch icon was there, I could access my
different .hod files and pin them to the "recent" area of the quick launch
icon.

Personally, I don't mind desktop shortcuts (or shortcuts in other
folders, for that matter), or custom hotkeys (using AutoHotkey if the
application in question doesn't provide what I want), so I haven't
personally used any of the suggestions linked to above.
