I hear you about not changing the file format. So this might in fact
be that situation I described where you have to use SQL over an ODBC
connection to access the data.

But then again it might not be *that* limited. Sure, you can't change
that particular file. But can you do *any* development on the i? A
very, very common arrangement is that you set up views or stored
procedures on the i which then make the externally originated query
simpler.
