Help needed. I have researched this but cannot find a definitive answer.
I am trying to generate a dynamic SQL INSERT using SQL descriptors.

I have built the SQL string with parameter markers, prepared the
statement, allocated and described the SQL descriptor.
Now I want to use the SET DESCRIPTOR to define the fields within the
SQL.

The part I am stuck on is the 'data' parameter.

I don't have a direct answer to your question. I do know the data
parameter is supposed to be a pointer to the data and not the actual data
itself. However, I can tell you what I have done. I used DESCRIBE TABLE
first in order to build the desired SQLDA. Then, at insert time, I loop
through the SQLDA elements supplying the pointers for the data and the
associated indicator. For example:

when GenUtl_SuffixString( iColumnName: 3 ) = lookup_names(DSC);
if SqlUtl_IsSQLType(Lookup_TblDesc.Var(dsx).Type: 'CHAR');
pTblDesc.Var(dsx).Data = %addr(pTblData.Dsc: *data);
else;
pTblDesc.Var(dsx).Data = %addr(pTblData.Dsc);
endif;
pTblDesc.Var(dsx).Ind = %addr(pIndArry(DSC));

Then I can just prepare and insert it (error checking omitted for
brevity).

exec sql prepare ACLKUPDRSM_Insert_Stmt
into :sqlda using system names from :sqlstmt;

exec sql execute ACLKUPDRSM_Insert_Stmt
using descriptor :sqlda;

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
