I appreciate the help, Pete (and Rob).

I am scouring the PDF file for the update again and I am just not seeing
any place that says to update to the latest IBM i Access and use the
console with that.

I caught everything else (even taking QHLPSYS out of the system library
list) but didn't see that.

Everything else went pretty good, but I really think it could be
streamlined a bunch more.

It is reasons like this, that we build our own upgrade guides. There is
quite a lot of jumping around, and I always recommend in my upgrade

can cross things out as you perform them.

Do I feel the upgrade steps could be better documented? Yes.

Do I agree with this sentiment?
<snip>
Well, to be honest, these docs would be more like comparing programmers
who just copy entire programs or large chunks of code into each program
instead of even calling a separate program to perform something specific.
</snip>
Not in the least. Especially in the light of this:
<snip>
jump here, jump here, go back, now go here </snip> Because there are some
sections in the documentation that are initiated from multiple areas.
But perhaps I misunderstood you. Maybe, instead of "Well, to be honest,
these docs "
you meant to say
"Well, to be honest, the documentation I would prefer"

Well, to be honest, these docs would be more like comparing programmers
who
just copy entire programs or large chunks of code into each program
instead
of even calling a separate program to perform something specific.

You may be comfortable with these docs because of the familiarity, but
they
could easily be cleaned up and placed into a better to use interface than
a
PDF file with links to sections but no back button. :)

All is well in the world... interesting.. that update didn't take as
long
as I thought it would. Less than an hour for sure including the re-IPL
to
the B side.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I have to admit, trying to follow the instructions for the OS update
makes
my eyes and brain feel like things could be simplified quite a bit...
jump
here, jump here, go back, now go here, run this to make sure things are
ok,
now do this... Miss one step and you could be in trouble. :)

Thanks, Rob.

I did everything except the new Java console... I just couldn't get it
to
work until I found the "Find Console" button, which did find my
console.

why I couldn't just start it, I have no idea.

now I'm back reading trough the instructions and ready to re-ipl to
the
catalog again I guess.

Second thing,

When the upgrade instructions say this:

initial
upgrade or replacement tasks>Preparing your console for software

Start and log on to System Service Tools (STRSST).
Select option 8, Work with service tools user IDs and Devices.
Select option 3, Select console.
Select Console type.

The value of the current console mode is present in the input field.
Verify that this is the correct setting. A value of **>>zero<<**
means
that the console mode has not been set and can interfere with the
automatic installation process. The console mode value must be one of
the
following values.
Console mode Description
3 Operations console (LAN)
4 Hardware management console (HMC)
</snip>
They REALLY mean it!!! (Feel free to replace REALLY with your
favored
expletive.)

They also mean this (from that same section)
<snip>
The console mode display also includes the option to allow your 5250
console to be taken over by another console. When this option is
turned
on, the system does not stop with a console failure but continues to
run
uninterrupted. For more information, see the topic Console takeover
and
recovery .
</snip>

We are battle scarred veterans. I have had this console error on
more
than one upgrade. You can bet I check this now.

example."
