I was thinking the first machine could download them and distribute them to
other machines. My understanding is that's what I can do with files
retrieved with SNDPTFORD.

Formally yes. Informally I have had, um, discussions with Dave, Alison,

:-)

My request is simple Batch FTP. Sure I get letting me sign on through the
web, verify eligibility, pick what I want and such. This happens all day
through Fix Central. It works somewhat different for PTFs (you get an Email
Link) vs HMC or VIOS updates (They drop batch FTP link right in your
browser) but we can then pick usually just one line from that and feed it
into our scripts, then launch.

That's then automated to pull 'em, add to image catalog, verify, create
the VOLUME_LIST file, correct it's CCSID, adjust ownership, and export to
NFS. And for O/S stacks update TFTPD settings to all network installs. An
automated process rarely misses a step. :-)

One little twist with the LicPgm downloads as they all come as ZIP files.
So an UnZip stepp would be required and that's a bit more coding in CL.

I don't mind your SNDLPORD thinking but I don't see IBM doing that as it's
unlikely to ever be done more than once on a partition.

I am curious if anyone has submitted formal requests to IBM for a better
approach? If so, can you talk about what you recommended? I've become a
fan of SNDPTFORD and think SNDLPORD** would be a nice addition.

Well I completely agree it's a colossal PITB for sure. For LicPgm
downloads its also pretty much the only option unless you like spending
your entire day clicking on download links and watching only two files
at a
time download. It took me over an hour to get the proper combination of
brower and Java to play nice and let me download.

HEY IBM: WE LIKE BATCH FTP! (Are you Listening??)

That said the folder I downloaded to (with a 73 in the name) was right
next to 71 and 72 and those both have XML toolkit in them and it did not
find those or complain they were duplicates which as you say they are.

My guess is that it's not really searching for them it's looking at
Download Director previous downloads so DD knows it has grabbed those
files
previously. In my case it was the first time I got DD to work on that VM
so
it had no history to befuddle it.

Perhaps locate a previous downloads or history file and smoke that??

Does anyone know how to force download director to download EVERYTHING

For instance, apparently the XML toolkit was not updated, OK, no issue
with
that but don't search the drive letter and say you downloaded this
before
on
some other directory (V7R2) so now I won't download it. It makes
getting
a
complete copy of a distribution really hard.

Download directory drives me nuts. If the designers ever had to live in
the
real world outside of IBM's glass house they would understand their
specifications are awful.
