Steve, I've tried that. It's a sick joke. Certain tasks have a stupid
prerequisite check built into it that still checks for Java 6. I used
that step you recommended, and removed Java 6 from my IBM i and:
1 - The http task would not start because it didn't have the required Java
2 - show jvm console command would abort because you didn't have the
required Java.
Opened ticket with IBM. They tried one hotfix and simply gave up.
Since our websites are Domino based we're rather dependent on the http
task.
The official line is that JAVA_HOME is to allow you to choose between
running either the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of JDK 6.
Granted you can use it to run other versions of Java. But certain things
still have this extremely stupid existence check.
Try it yourself,
SAVLICPGM of jdk 6 to a save file.
DLTLICPGM of jdk 6
fire up Domino.

When IBM i 7.2 came out they lost one version of Domino because that same
existence check checked for 5761JV1 and it was renamed to 5770JV1. So
instead of changing the existence check to use JAVA_HOME they hardcoded
the JDK 6 directories.
