Based on the way you talk about "FTP with encrypted authentication",
what you really mean *is* FTPS.

That's for establishing an FTPS connection.

I think the default on FileZilla is "Use explicit
FTP over TLS if available".

Again, that's FTPS.

What you need to understand is that FTPS (also called "FTP over SSL"
or "FTP over TLS") *is* "plain" FTP, but over a channel secured by
SSL/TLS. (The relationship between SSL and TLS is roughly analogous to
the relationship between AS/400 and IBM i.)

SFTP is completely different, in terms of the plumbing. It only has
"FTP" in the name because the application-level interface resembles
FTP. In reality, it's best thought of as "file transfer via SSH".
