IBM has realized that supporting but the minimum JDK for many of their
products in a lame attempt to keep software working for x-3 just is self
defeating in a modern Java environment.
I suspect that much of the stuff to run on iNext will bypass JDK 7 and
just prefer JDK 8. Better to be ready for the future than suffer FUD when
JDK 7 bites the dust.
Again, why they dropped support for IBM i 6.1.

I did not see that about IBM i Navigator requiring JDK 6. Wait, oh crap

I suppose one could open a ticket and ask if there's a properties file for
this you can change. Something like
/QIBM/UserData/OS400/Navigator/config/webnav.properties
