Joe, this is good advice - for your sysadmin.

In addition to programming, I am the sysadmin here, and it is really bad
when one or more programmers mucks around with system-wide job settings
without:
a) asking me
b) asking each other
c) telling me
d) telling each other

It's truly awful what can happen when this stuff is not coordinated, but
there is one scenario which is even worse:
a) a programmer implements advice from the internet without
understanding the ramifications

Ask your sysadmin.
Advise your sysadmin.
Don't usurp your sysadmin.
She'll thank you.
