As long as you "know" that the from/to are both alphanumeric, and handle
it appropriately with the apostrophes,
or "know" that both are numeric,
then you should be fine.

If you are using stored procedures there is error trapping you can do to
handle any exceptions. I'll assume at this time you don't need a basic
tutorial on that.

There are few grey areas.
- The "from" field supports x characters but the "to" column only supports
x-y characters.
- Legitimate range of integer values.
- Column defined as binary on the IBM i instead of integer (kind of old
school but still seen)
- Referential integrity. A 'C' in that column better be on file in the
referred to file.
- Check constraints. If the Active_Record_Code can only be 'A' or 'Z'...
DDS is a sick joke and you can ignore it's pathetic substitute for check
constraints.
- Trigger validation.
- Decimal precision
