I actually have been through this so many times that I have typed up
instructions which go like

(it looks better with the spacing, fonts, etc in the Word document)
...
After an IPL we will look at several things to ensure that:
- system is not in a restricted state
- If there was a possibility of a major network change, like a system
move, that we’re still
good.
- If there might be some general hardware difficulties, like from a system
migration, that we
handled those.

DSPLOG PERIOD((*AVAIL *BEGIN)) MSGID(CPI9E75 CPI9E77 CPF9E7D CPF9E7F

Record the value of your controlling subsystem ___________________

WRKSBS
F11=Display system data
Write down status of the controlling subsystem you just recorded
___________
If it is RSTD for Restricted then perform your orderly shutdown steps and
IPL again.

DSPMSG QSYSOPR ASTLVL(*BASIC)
Look for messages stuck in MSGW.

WRKJOB QSTRUPJD See if it is stuck in a message wait. If so, look at it’s
joblog and
perform appropriate actions. You may have to answer a message in QSYSOPR.
If you notice the issue is with the OSCUSTOM program please note the
following :
- Program (OSCUSTOM)
- Line number
- Message id
- Option you took to resolve it.

It should be ACTIVE. If not, make it so.

CALL QCMD
PING ‘127.0.0.1’
You should see: Connection verification statistics: 5 of 5 successful (100
%). This will
verify that TCP/IP is running. Stop until it is. Normally it should be,
unless QSYSNOMAX
was held or some such thing.

2. Work with TCP/IP routes
Record the IP address of your "Next Hop" for your *DFTROUTE
________________
PING x, where x is the IP address of your next hop. You’ll have to
surround it with
apostrophes. Sample: PING ’10.17.6.1’ Most of our next hops end with ‘.1’.
I’d be
surprised to find one that didn’t.
You should see: Connection verification statistics: 5 of 5 successful (100
%). Failure to see
full success should be a hard halt. Resolve this.

PING GDSDNS
This does two things. One, it verifies that a DNS lookup is successful.
Two, it verifies that
the route is letting us through.

WRKJOBQ QSYSNOMAX
Write down status (see far upper right, should say RLS/SBS).

If status is held, release it with RLSJOBQ QSYSNOMAX

WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*CTL) CFGD(*VWS) RANGE(*OBJ)
Even if they are already varied on, vary them on. This will vary on
devices associated with
them. Really thins down the next command.

WRKCFGSTS *DEV STATUS(*VARYOFF)
Look for sessions that are varied off. There are two types:
User Sessions - They are usually a name followed by S1, S2, S3... (e.g. -
JENNWS1).
Virtual Sessions - They begin with VWS (normally none of these will be
varied off)
If you have to vary on any sessions, please take a print screen showing
the sessions you had
to vary on. Turn them in with the downtime instructions and they will be
investigated so
that they can be fixed for the next downtime.
Do NOT vary on printers and other devices, only vary on the sessions.
