I can definitely see where "QUANT00001" would be more cryptic. However,
you really need to keep up on the languages. This is a valid RPGLE
program:

DCL-F longname DISK(*EXT) USAGE(*UPDATE) alias;
read longname;
mylongnamecolumn=%trim(mylongnamecolumn)+'2';
update longnamer;
*inlr=*on;
commit;
return;

Notice that 'alias'?

BTW, seu will have a conniption with that.
I started everything in column 9.

File was created this way:
CREATE TABLE ROB.LONGNAME
(
MYLONGNAMECOLUMN FOR COLUMN LNAMECOL
CHAR (10 ) NOT NULL WITH DEFAULT
) rcdfmt longnamer
Comment: Did you see where I can give it a short name (lnamecol) also?

INSERT INTO ROB.LONGNAME VALUES('A')

commit

After executing the program:
select * from rob.longname for fetch only
MYLONGNAMECOLUMN
A2
