We are planning on installing a 2nd system at primary site to allow HA switching.

We already have HDS storage at both sites used by other platforms, and it is in use on IBM i with VIOS at the DR site. Management would like to use HDS storage for IBM i at primary site too.

Dumping iTERA is not a given, that is one alternative. We have used 3 node replication with iTERA temporarily for migrating to new hardware in the past and it works well. One of the trade-offs is paying for CPU memory and IBM i licensing for the CPU spent on replication vs. having the storage hardware do it.

Yes we regularly perform DR tests on the hotsite.

So my questions are still:

Is anyone here using PowerHA with IBM SVC's?

If not, what are the common storage platforms used with PowerHA?

I know iTERA will work with HDS storage behind VIOS (we're doing it now)

So you're getting a second system.
You're getting some sort of SAN system to support both systems.
And it's a given that when you do you will dump iTERA and go to Power HA.

Or with both systems be local and you'll still be using iTERA to your hotsite?

Have you ever tested running on your hotsite? If so, is it really "useable"? Or is useable redefined to not include any of the following:
- any 5250 access
- any ODBC access
- any website access
Basically, if PR can print checks (providing all the hours have already been entered) then that means the hotsite is a success?

We currently only have one system at primary site, we use iTERA for
replication to the hot site only.

Why are you having such long downtime for PTF's and whatnot in your iTera
setup?

We are using Mimix. Once a quarter we do PTF's and whatnot on the
'backup' lpar and no one notices. Then, that weekend we do a switch from
primary to backup. It takes more time quiescing the applications than to
do the actual switch. About an hour to an hour and a half in all. We run
on the 'backup' for the weekend. Then we switch back on Sunday night.

Heck, even my bank (and it's no local yokel) publishes system outages in
advance.
