The closer I looked the more obvious that was - for example it is really inconsistent in its use of spacing.

As with anything else once you know a language it is easier to tell the good from the bad - but when starting out what have you got except the comments of others on the code in question?

The thing about your assumption is that the standards are different
depending on whether you are looking for "code to get stuff done" or
"code for learning". Some code meets both of those goals quite well
(including some recipes in the ActiveState cookbook). That particular
one is what I'd call "shippable" but not one that I'd put into a
textbook.
