the 57B4 card states:
Removable media device (SAS Tape) are supported in a single controller
configuration only and cannot be combined with disk devices attached to the
same adapter. Removable media is not supported in multi-initiator and high
availability (dual storage IOA) configurations
It also mentions:
Specific AE1 or YE1 SAS cable features are required for SAS Tape attachment

Does your enviroment fulfill those requirements? You might have an
operational card but the LIC can be picky on which configurations it
supports...

Best of luck

Yeah, I'm with you on the PTF idea. The IOA comes up fine in service tools;
it reports as operational.

I haven't found anything so far that suggests the card and tape aren't
supported, other than the reference that said it could not be used for an
ALT-IPL.

Reports as a 57B4 in the HMC, basically a EJ0J which tells me it needs LIC
of at least TR7 with MF57865, MF57923, MF58006 all of which appear to be in
TR10 - which is the LIC DVD I am using.

Pre-requisites for EJ0J

Interestingly if I go the System Storage Interoperation Center the adapter
it tells me I need for the library is a 5912

My first guess is that you are "missing" PTF's that support either the
device or the IOA card.

if you go into service tools to look at the hardware resources what is
the
status?

Hi guys

I am currently doing a build of a new test system for a customer and
having
a few hiccups along the way.

The machine I am using is a new Power 8 S824 6. It has a TS2900 tape
library with HH LTO6 attached to a 57B4 SAS adapter. It is intended to
run
the IBM i Operating system (no VIOS)

The problems I am having are around getting the tape drive visible. It
is
not supported as an ALT-IPL device as far as I can tell from the IBM
docs.

That's OK, I half expected that and have a V7R1 DVD to boot from which
according to me is resave level RS-710-N so V7R1 TR10. Despite that I
can't
seem to get the tape library visible as an alternate installation device
either after booting from DVD.

The library is currently set to sequential mode as an autoloader.

I have an option 21 save from the customer test system and at this point
what I am thinking about doing is installing LIC form the DVD and then
installing Base OS from DVD as well. After that I will do the rest of
the
recovery from Tape and then go back and reload/re-apply all the PTFs.

Anybody got any other suggestions as to what I missed or what I can try
?

If the config is not quite supported that's OK, I'd just like to know
that;s the case (haven't been able to track down a definitive IBM doc as
yet) - I didn't do the config I just got sent out to make it work....
