Well, I'm afraid I don't have too much say influence with the
Infrastructure Group, less so in the Windows servers area.

Our shop runs mainly on a HP/Linux/Oracle/SAP platform, along an old 520
(V5R3!) working mainly for Business Intelligence and some auxiliary apps
(read: to expensive to implement with SAP). So the Windows-based apps are
something like the "poor kid on the block".

In fact, the time cards are a third-party app mostly written, I am told,
with FoxPro and SQL Server (!!). They (the external software providers)
tell us that *maybe* they can rebuild the main data file.

Yesterday I wrote a couple of programs in our 520 that reads (using JDBC,
thanks Scott K.!!) the main (SQL Server) Timecard data file and checks if
there has been any data written in the last 24 hours (running under
WRKJOBSCDE). If nothing can be found it sends an email to several people,
beginning with the Infrastructure Group...

Thanks for your concern and tips. We all have our very special "moments"
when working in IT... It what makes this jobs so interesting, I think :-)

Best Regards,

Luis
