Well that is EXACTLY what I do with all my lab servers such as:

Midway-10xxxxxx
Enterprise-10xxxxxx
Kennedy-10xxxxx

I also learned from writing scripts from i to the HMC the rules about using quotation marks etc. You will save some time and grief by not including any spaces in the name.

However, having this long system name composed of "System",
the make, model and serial number in which all systems have
the same make, all systems have pretty much the same model,
and all systems are only off by a character or two on the
serial number means little to nothing to my fellow coworkers.

Agree .... What I would prefer we would have done is name things
along the line of

name-serial#

instead of just a simple name. Right now the names are ATS_blah
where blah is pretty much the model name (S824, 740C, 780D,
etc). While it's shorter than the default name, it certainly
isn't very helpful.

In your environment, if the racks where the servers are
installed have signs saying "RACK1", "RACK2", etc. Then the
naming you mentioned earlier may prove to be very helpful to
your coworkers. Our machines have their serial #s on a tag on
the front (white label on the black cabinet), so serial #s
prominent in the name seen on the HMC would be very helpful.
