Larry,

Not using KVM, so I would be blind during the HMC reboot, correct?

Yes you putty into the command line to do the pre-upgrade work and that's no issue. But the actual upgrade occurs during a special IPL of the hMC and if you can't see the screen on-site you are blind. There is no network access during that except for the KVM redirect if you have it installed because that is in the firmware.

For the remote access for upgrades, would using putty to access restricted shell be a similar option?

Paul,

There is an option for the servers on which HMC is based to enable redirecting KVM functions over the network to a browser based application. The app is java and is downloaded from the HMC (System X Server technically as it's all in the hardware) to your browser.

For a long time it was an actual chip but I think most recent ones are a software code to enable it.

Clearly using the browser to access the HMC is fabulously better but when you're doing upgrades etc that's not available so having this capability is Very handy!!

As for burning DVD vs FTP. FTP HANDS Down with the only exception being a crappy network (or no network) on site.

1) What do you mean by the "remote chip"?
2) I access the HMC remotely via browser, or are you referring to a different remote access?
3) Our HMC has dedicated monitor, keyboard, no kvm needed.
4) If you had a choice of burning the DVD or using the images on an FTP Server, which method would you use?

Yes, our KVM's are remotely accessible. Recently upgraded models as old models were freaking out due to newer levels of Java and browsers.
Something to keep in mind if one starts thinking about adding a KVM especially with some used ones going cheap on ebay. There's a reason...
(I was raised by a skeptic.)

If the KVM is remotely accessible it is. Otherwise same issue!

Of course, having your HMC on a KVM is also sweet...
