Short answer: Yes, and don't even try it.

IBM i hosting Ethernet with the bridging in effect will create a layer two
switch on your system. That physical line that has the bridge "can" have an
address assigned to it but then 100% of any and all CPU available will then
be used to figure out how to route the IP traffic. VERY BAD.

I'm not completely sure from your note how this is configured, but I'm going
to guess you have VIOS and the Ethernet is virtualized by VIOS. That's
completely different than using the Ethernet Bridge on IBM i.

In VIOS you can assign many different Ethernet connections to a single NIC
port so unless you have a very complex and extensive set up I would guess
you have plenty of capacity to set up another virtual Ethernet on it.

Assuming one of the NIC ports is given to VIOS to manage it, I would not
mess with it but having said that there is very little traffic on that line
so virtualizing another line over the top of it should not present a
problem.

Subject: VIOS and Shared Ethernet Adapter

With IBM i Hosting IBMi they say not to put an IP in the on the line that is
being used for the shared adapter on the host because of performance
reasons.

So Question Number 1 is. Is that true or VIOS. I am short ports and if
possible use the same port that my VIOS uses for it IP as Shared Ethernet
Adapter. I see in a doc that it warning if an IP on on that device it won't
be when done.

Question number 2 - Throwing Performance under the bus so to speak can I get
it to work long enough to test a theory?
