Since we have redundant physical boxes in which the Mimix backup for
production and the Mimix backup for development are on a different
physical box we do a Mimix switch quarterly and IPL the whole frame then.
I often load the firmware up before hand (providing it is non disruptive)
and just "platform IPL level" it during the quarterly maintenance.

That is not the answer to "how often should...". YMMV. Keep in mind
there are enhancements in firmware that may require an IPL for that part
of the firmware to be well and truly active. And if it's a feature that
you plan to take advantage of then you will have to consider that.

Somewhere between frequent whole frame IPL's and the great lie "if it
ain't broke, don't fix it" lies the answer.

An independent issue is how often should you "accept" a fix. "Accepting"
moves (T)emporary fixes to (P)ermanent fixes. Which makes more sense than
IBM i's version, which is A side and B side. In which A is permanent and
B is temporary. I normally "accept" right before applying the next
firmware level.
