Back around 2001, I was an admin for a shop that hosted AS/400s in each of
their global distribution centers. One of my first duties as admin was to
get all of the systems on a supported release and PTF'd as appropriate. I
forget the exact details, but one of the boxes had a serial number that IBM
claimed was manufactured overseas, and in order to get it into their system
so we could order release upgrades, they had to change the serial number on
the box! It was just unbelievable the hoops we had to jump through to be
able to upgrade that box. I distinctly remember IBM invoking the "talk to
your BP" line, and the BP had no idea what the hell they were supposed to
do. I would have hoped by now that they've made things easier, but, I
guess...

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

This just recently happened to me!
IBM's records showed a different customer name associated with our machine.

Why can't IBM correct the information?

They insisted I contact the business partner to update the information.

I don't think it requires all that. Just an IBM ID (which is easy to
create), machine ID and serial# should be all you need. I stopped using
the 800 number years ago because I got tired of being told we weren't IBM
customers. For me, it was faster to set up and submit the PMR online than
to argue with the person on the phone.
